Already in the early Twenties there were some voices of nature lovers, Franz Niegerl was one of them, who demanded a stronger protection of the inimitable nature of the Kaiser mountain range. The most important fact was to avoid the construction of cable cars and roads. During this time there was no success for such deals of thoughts.
After a public opinion poll in 1961 it was decided to arrange an nature reserve, which was sealed on April the 19th 1963. The nature reserve, which includes all summits of the Wilder Kaiser and the Zahmer Kaiser mountain range, comprises 102km2 and extends to the area of the communities Kufstein, St.Johann in Tirol, Ebbs, Ellmau, Going, Kirchdorf, Scheffau und Walchsee. The mountains show altitudes between 480m and 2.344m (Ellmauer Halt). Already during these times, the Kaiser mountains have been a famous holiday destination for a winter holiday in Tyrol.

There is only one cable car up to the Brenntenjoch at Kufstein. Other lift projects have not been realized because of the nature reserve. For a long time the construction of a street into the Kaiser valley was controversially discussed. Until 2006, the Kaiser valley had been the only valley in Austria which had no connection to the road system at all. Starting in Ebbs the street construction works began on Mai 19th 2006. Also a 830m long tunnel was build and was finished on March 10th 2007. Now the Kaiser valley also offers a connection to the road system to its inhabitants.
At present the Tyrolean government works on a new establishment of this nature reserve, which mainly belongs to the borders of the area from 1963. However, it will be adapted to the actual legal situation.
